Abstract

Introduction and Objectives: The intellectual framework of Martyr Sayyid Muhammad Baqir al-Sadr is a coherent system wherein the core lies in his methodology of knowledge production. However, most studies have suffered from disciplinary reductionism, treating his works as isolated islands—Iqtisaduna in economics and Al-Usus al-Mantiqiyyah lil-Istiqra’ in philosophy. This analytical gap has obscured the deep logical connection between his epistemological foundations and his validation methodology, particularly regarding the “school discovery” (Iktishaf al-Madhab) approach in Iqtisaduna. Critics have typically evaluated this method through the lens of traditional jurisprudence or conventional economic philosophy, overlooking that Sadr had previously established a fundamental solution for transitioning from particular data to universal certainty through his “Intrinsic School of Knowledge” in Al-Usus.
The primary premise of this research is that the controversies surrounding Iqtisaduna’s methodology stem from neglecting the application of Al-Usus’s logical mechanism within it. Consequently, the main objective is to prove that the process of school discovery, in terms of validation, is the exact application of this inductive logic. While the initial formulation of hypotheses in Iqtisaduna possesses an interpretative and ijtihad-based nature, the transition to objective certainty is a systematic process grounded in the logical falsification of the “legislative coincidence hypothesis”—the random harmonization of rulings.
Method: This is a fundamental-theoretical study conducted within an interpretative-analytical paradigm. The research relies on qualitative, textual, and comparative analysis rather than empirical data collection, delving deeply into Sadr’s foundational texts (specifically Al-Usus and Iqtisaduna). The analytical process is structured in three main steps. First, Al-Usus was conceptually dissected to extract the logical trajectory of producing certainty (accumulating evidence and falsifying the coincidence hypothesis). Second, the school discovery section in Iqtisaduna was analyzed to reconstruct Sadr’s actual process from gathering texts to claiming the discovery of a system. Third, the results were comparatively mapped to demonstrate that the discovery process reflects the exact logical sequence of Al-Usus, with textual evidence (jurisprudential rulings) substituting empirical evidence.
Results: Conceptual analysis revealed that the intrinsic school of induction is a two-stage mechanism for generating certainty: the first stage (objective internal generation) mathematically reduces the probability of the rival hypothesis (coincidence) by accumulating evidence, and the second stage (intrinsic internal generation) makes an epistemological leap to falsify this negligible probability, achieving objective certainty regarding a macro-order.
This exact algorithm is implemented in Iqtisaduna. The raw data here are the dispersed texts and rulings of Islamic law. The rival hypothesis, conceptualized in this study as the “legislative coincidence hypothesis,” claims these rulings lack systematic coherence. The jurist first proposes a theoretical model (e.g., the centrality of labor in ownership) and then demonstrates that the alignment of numerous specific rulings with this axis cannot be accidental. The accumulation of harmonious rulings invalidates the legislative coincidence hypothesis, yielding certainty about the existence of a unified foundation (the economic school).

Discussion and Conclusion: These findings elevate the common understanding of the school discovery method. Discovery in Sadr’s thought is not mere inner intuition or speculative ijtihad; it is a logical deduction backed by probability calculus. Previous critiques that questioned Sadr’s method due to the multiplicity of theories or the lack of individual jurisprudential authority for each ruling suffer from a categorical error. They failed to realize that Sadr sought epistemological certainty in a system—achieved by reducing the probability of coincidence to zero—rather than merely seeking jurisprudential evidentiary authority for individual rulings.
Martyr Sadr elevated the concept of induction from a mere empirical tool to a general logic of knowledge capable of proving not only gravity in physics but also the structure of a legislative school and even the objective reality of the external world. The falsification of the coincidence hypothesis acts as the driving engine of his entire epistemological apparatus. Thus, Iqtisaduna is not merely an economic-jurisprudential work, but the practical manifestation of a broader paradigm for the epistemological reconstruction of Islamic humanities.
This research demonstrates that the unity between Al-Usus and Iqtisaduna is not a procedural unity across all levels of inference, but a structural unity in the logic of judgment and validation based on the falsification of the coincidence hypothesis. The concept of “discovery” in Sadr’s thought is redefined as a logical process based on the accumulation of textual evidence and the falsification of the legislative coincidence hypothesis—not an intuitive or speculative endeavor. Sadr’s application of this general logic of knowledge to the domain of legislative rulings demonstrates that inductive reasoning can discover not only natural laws but also legislative systems based on internal coherence and the accumulation of evidence.
This finding also reveals the precise coherence of Sadr’s intellectual system. He not only invented the method of producing certainty in Al-Usus but applied it with full confidence across various intellectual domains—from Al-Madrasah al-Qur’aniyyah to Al-Islam Yaqūd al-Hayāt—confirming the hypothesis of this research. The novelty of this study lies in its deeper examination of the logic and epistemology behind these works, rather than remaining at the conventional level of jurisprudential or economic analysis. Through this application of inductive mechanism in the stage of judgment, it can be claimed that Sadr’s intellectual project, in reconstructing religious science, is less a slogan of criticizing the West and more an effort to provide a logical basis for validation and certainty—a basis applicable both to proving natural laws and to establishing legislative coherence.
