Abstract

The production of original science and scientific theories has recently been brought into the center of attention by researchers and policy-makers in Iran as a strategic priority. Achieving a creative and productive scientific community builds upon a detailed and profound understanding of those factors which affect the process of scientific production. Amongst these factors, psychological variables play an important role. The psychology of science is an emerging and novel member of science studies family which applies the theoretical frameworks and tools of psychology to studying the behavior of scientists as well as the mechanisms through which psychological variables affect scientific behavior. The psychology of science is a member of science studies and is also rooted in paradigms and theoretical traditions of the science of psychology. This paper reviews the historical emergence and development of the field. The paper also provides an analysis of challenges around the epistemological foundations of the psychology of science.
